As Sheila’s dementia developed, and she became ever more confused, she also became more charming! I remember visiting her with Gill and driving them all over Poole on some adventures. When we got back to her house she took a look at me, then turned to Gill. ‘Do you think your driver would like a cup of tea?’ she asked. I love it that she had completely forgotten who I was, but still wanted to offer me hospitality. I also think she may have imagined her and Gill as titled and wealthy ladies with their own chauffeur! Up until the last few months she was always up for a jigsaw, could catch a ball with ease – and seemed forever curious about what was down the corridor, or behind a closed door. And I could make her smile by sticking my tongue out and blowing raspberries! Henry x
